[fn] The journey for cake

SHORT STORY☺

The journey for cake

Annas boot hit the dirt road, kicking up dust. She cursed and rubbed the dust out of her eyes and adjusted her bag. Her hope of reaching the village before dark was dwindling.

She opened the map, “invineo.” she said and a small line of silver appeared, connecting a small dot on the map, and her. The line was the size of her thumbnail, not too far, she thought. She folded her map and began walking again, holding a thin cloth over her mouth and nose to protect herself from the suffocating dust.

Just as the sun set and the moon was starting to glow bright, she rounded a turn and saw rows of houses, and a packed dirt road. She took a tentative step forward then pivoted towards the woods. This village wasn’t known to be friendly towards strangers. She lied down her bedroll and attempted to fall asleep. The air nipped at her cheeks and the constant sound of the forest left her unsettled. But eventually she got so tired she fell asleep.

In the morning she changed into her extra pair of clothes and made her way into the main part of the village, the market. She caught loathing glances from passerbys. She quickly found the stall she was looking for, the jewelry stall.

The woman was plump and freckled, the description she had received. “copular.” she said once she was closer. The woman's eyes widened before waving her into the ally beside them. At the end of the ally was a stack of carboard boxes, under them, the magic circle used as the entrance. “cognitionis.” she whispered. That was the name of this particular alchemist group. It wasn’t the one she belonged too, but she needed the information they have.

The magic circle opened a hidden entrance to their library. Inside was rows upon rows of bookcases that reached the ceiling. There was an overwhelming smell of parchment and chemicals, that burned the hairs in her nose.

As she wandered through the maze of books, she began to hear the distant sound speaking and objects clinking together. The sounds got louder the closer she got and when she rounded a corner, she saw a small group of people in white cloaks mixing ingredients together.

“who are you?” a tall lanky woman in glasses asked, full of suspicion.

“my name is Anna, I'm from the alchemist group viatorem, I received an order to obtain a book.” Anna explained, hoping they were informed of her.

“yes, I heard about that, what was the book you were sent for?” a small mousy boy around her age asked.

“ CI sulphuris, and principia aurum.” she stated. Her hands fidgeting behind her back.

“give me a bit to look for them.” he said and walked off into the maze.

“give me a hand while he's gone.” the stern woman with glasses commanded. Anna obliged and walked over to the table they were working on.

There was an alchemic circle drawn on with chalk and a leather-bound book open on the side.

“mix the bowl until it turns black and is a sort of pasty texture.” the woman ordered. Anna began mixing and it soon turned black and into a paste. The woman took the bowl and waved her away.

“what are you making anyway?” anna asked. She had never seen this type of alchemy.

“chocolate cake.” the woman responded. The boy came back just then handing anna the books she had asked for. She bid farewell and began her journey home.
