SHORT STORY😊:~[RF] You Pay a Price for it, Part 1

This was a term which people often used to described things that people do that often turns out badly. It wasn't the intent of the person for their choices in life to turn out badly but it just happened that way. Nearly all the time it's the choices that you make in life.

My name is Eric Miller and I'm 60 years old. I recently retired as Police Chief of a small farming community in rural Nebraska which is about 2 hours from Omaha. I'm married to Sandy who just turned 60. We've been married 37 years and have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Everyone thinks of us as a nice conservative mid-west couple. Well we are for the most part. Upon graduation from high school, most people in our community leave and go to Omaha or Lincoln. Some go to college like Sandy did or others like myself go into the military. I went into the navy. Then you had some who worked at the Pet Feed Plant.

My dad was a farmer as was several generations in our family. We are descendants of the Homesteaders. My two brother stayed on the farm, I went into the navy and my two sisters went to college.

The story that I'm about to tell you happened back in July of 1978. Sandy went to a rock concert for the heavy metal band Crazy Men in Action in Des Moines, Iowa. They spotted her in the audience and gave her a back stage pass. The fact that she was with me hardly mattered . I was on leave for 3 weeks. At the time Sandy had a crush on the lead man Mark Boils. She hoped to met him. He had ideas of more than just meeting her. I knew this and tried to talk her out of it. She ignored me and accused me of being jealous.

I managed to go in with her. She was asked to go into another room. I noticed that there was another woman in the same room but didn't get a good look at her. I was asked to leave at this point. I left but waited outside. I waited and waited. I didn't know what to do but I knew something terrible had happened. I then saw a limo came out of nowhere and the vehicle almost hit me. The driver opened his window and cussed at me and gave me the finger. I could see Sandy in the back of the vehicle screaming for help. I noticed that there was a bus running and the bus driver was smoking a cigarette. He didn't notice when I commandeered the bus. The bus was small which was good.

The limo left Des Moines and headed west towards Nebraska going at a high rate of speed. These were the days that cell phones didn't exist so I had no way to call police. We drove across Nebraska thru Omaha, then Lincoln and soon we were out in farm country. Then the limo finally exited at a deserted rest area. By now it about 4am and it's very dark out. The guy gets out of the limo and looks around. I try to stay hidden from view. I'm surprised to see Sandy get into the front seat and drive the limo away. As I'm driving out, the guy starts shooting at the bus and I clip him. He falls to the ground in pain.

I have two flat tires but I'm able to caught up with Sandy who was stopped a short distance away. I get into the limo and drive. The idiot starts shooting again and hits the oil tank of the bus that is now on fire.

I drive to the next exit, turn around and go back towards Omaha. We can see the flames from the bus. We get out of there just before they close the highway. I can see that Sandy is very upset about something and then she tell me what upset her. There is a body in the limo. Now what are we going to do?
