SHORT STORY😊:~[SP] The Cycle

I see my life flash before my eyes. The last thing I really remember is a gun being held to my head and the sound of a trigger soon after. All I see is darkness for a while. Absolute darkness. I’m in a dark and desolate space all alone, I’m unable to feel anything except for the shock of experiences the final moments of life.

Then suddenly I see a small glimmer of light. At first it isn’t much bigger than the palm of my hand. It floats around me like a firefly, looking as if it were curiously examining me for the first time. The light soon becomes brighter, eventually engulfing the entirety of my vision.

I’m blinded for a moment, and I become confused but still in the same state of shock at the same time. Eventually my vision comes back.

I’m sitting on in front of a small desk in an office space. In front of me there’s a computer that is turned off with a keyboard and mouse in front of me. A dim light bulb on the ceiling barely functions to provide light for the desolate room. Thoughts are still racing through my head:

Where am I? Did I die? I'm surely dead, right? What’s going on?

I look outside of a small window to my right and I see nothing except for the vast space of nothingness staring back at me. There is no color in the room but a dull shade of grey, as if it was once a glossy white paint that has been left untouched for years.

I look back at the computer, and I instinctively press the power button. After a few seconds, I hear the soft whirring of an outdated engine and the screen turns on. There is a subtle crack on the side of the screen as if it has been worn out after tons of uses. I quickly notice as the computer begins to load some sort of program.

Welcome, User #105,534,634,014.

Soon, a profile screen appears with a full profile of my identity, my life accomplishments, my failures, my relationships, my hopes, my dreams, my prides, my everything. I’m in awe as I begin to view the entirety of my life through a screen that knows nothing about who I am. After moments of scrolling down, I eventually reach the bottom of the page, where there is a small number followed by a short list summarizing my life:

You placed in #5,423,153th place!

+Loving and compassionate to close friends and family

+Musically gifted

-Secretly manipulative

-Cheated multiple times on wife.

-Killed 1

Grade: C-

How did the damn computer know everything I’ve ever done? I had kept that part of my life a secret until very the end. In fact, it was my secrecy of the past that led to my death. But still- How did it know every single small thing I’ve ever done wrong in my life? No, this isn’t real. Is it? Is somebody watching me?

After a few minutes of silent panicking, the screen turns to black, and a new page appears with text that simply reads:

Get up and be better next time.

The computer shuts down and I see the small light once again. It fills my vision and eventually I am once again engulfed in the light that brought me here in the first place. I can’t feel anything throughout me for what feels like an eternity.

Soon I begin to feel my feet touch the ground, even though I still cannot see anything. I feel my right arm grasping onto something and after a while my body begins shaking as if I was incredibly nervous and furious at the same time. I feel a burning sensation run throughout myself, and eventually I feel it run from my head to my spine then onto my hands, where I am still holding onto some sort of object. I am feeling every emotion possible all at once, and it begins to drive me insane. I yell out at the top of my lungs for help and nobody answers, but the voice I yell seems much more higher pitched than before.

Eventually, I become so enraged that I squeeze the object in my hand, and suddenly I hear a gunshot and my vision instantly comes back.

I see the dead body of my own self, lying helplessly on the ground. I don’t feel any emotion at this point. Absolutely nothing.

Then I look up to a small mirror on the side of the room and I see myself as my wife.

All of a sudden, the realization that I had killed my own self crashes upon me. The faults of my past came back to haunt me in the end, and it was myself that delivered the final blow.

The cycle continues.
